At age six when he started school his two best childhood friends were no longer allowed to play with him because he was black. This left a lasting impression that stayed with him all his life.
In high school, Martin entered an oratorial contest and won by demonstrating his extraordinary ability to connect with people. Unfortunately, on the way home from the competition, he still had to stand up on the bus because he was not allowed to sit in the white section. But he had a vision and a sense he could make a difference and was never confrontational and did not believe violence would solve anything.
MLK studied hard to earn degrees from Morehouse College and Boston University. He emerged as the leader of a civil rights movement based on non-violent resistance.
MLK ultimately helped draft the Civil Rights Bill and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Time magazine named him “Man of the Year”. He delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. His peaceful yet determined dream changed the world.
