Proud parents
His father was nicknamed “Cash”. Both mother and
father adored him and his baby brother. They were
proud people.
Cruel World
One of his first encounters with prejudice was when
he was very young and he was walking with his
mother in the city, and she asked a store owner for a
drink of water for her son, and he slammed the door
in their face. Later, he recalled seeing a story about
a young black boy who was lynched while on vacation
with his family.
It is about the bike
As a young boy, he received a new Schwinn bike for
Christmas that he cherished. One day he and his
friends rode into the city and his bike was stolen. He
was devastated and determined to whup whoever
stole it.
Found himself in Joe's Gym
He went to the police and was directed to go see
Joe Martin, a policeman who ran a local gym and
taught young boys to box in his spare time. Cassius
started to box and train with a vengeance.
Envisioned being the greatest
Before he was twelve, he dreamed of hearing the
announcer introduce, “Cassius Clay, heavyweight
champion of the world”. He was determined to be
the best, and knew that meant he was going to have
to stay focused and work hard.
Inspiring Confidence
He remembered walking with his dad toward the ring
for his first fight and his eyes widened when he saw
a huge older white boy in the ring. His father told
him we’re going to whup him, which gave him the
confidence to win. It also taught him that he was
never alone in the ring, and always part of a team.
Boy becomes legend
He went on to have a legendary career, the first
fighter ever to win the heavyweight championship 3
times. He became one of the most recognizable and
revered individuals on the planet.
